How it works?
Uses of Nifedipine 20 mg Tablet
Nifedipine is primarily used to treat several cardiovascular and vascular conditions due to its potent calcium channel blocking properties. In hypertension, it works by relaxing blood vessels and reducing peripheral resistance, which helps lower blood pressure and prevent complications such as stroke, heart attack, and kidney damage.
Precautions of Nifedipine 20 mg Tablet
Important Precautions for Nifedipine Tablets 20 mg
Not a Beta-Blocker
- Nifedipine is not a beta-blocker.
- If you’re stopping a beta-blocker, don’t stop suddenly. Reduce the dose slowly over 8–10 days to avoid serious side effects.
- Nifedipine won’t protect you from problems caused by stopping other blood pressure medicines suddenly.
Taking with Other Medicines
- You can take nifedipine with other blood pressure medicines, including beta-blockers.
- But be careful: combining them may cause dizziness or fainting when standing up (called postural hypotension).
- Nifedipine won’t stop the “rebound” effect (rise in blood pressure) that can happen after stopping other medicines.
Heart & Blood Pressure Risks
Use nifedipine carefully if you have:
- Very low blood pressure (systolic pressure below 90 mmHg)
- Heart failure
- Severe narrowing of heart valves (aortic stenosis)
- Weak heart function (poor cardiac reserve)
Sometimes, nifedipine can make heart failure worse.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
- Pregnancy: Only use nifedipine if absolutely needed, such as in severe high blood pressure that doesn’t respond to other treatments.
- Breastfeeding: Not recommended. Nifedipine can pass into breast milk, and its effects on babies are unknown.
- If used with IV magnesium sulfate during pregnancy, blood pressure may drop too much—this can harm both mother and baby. Close monitoring is needed.
Diabetes
- If you have diabetes, nifedipine may affect your blood sugar control. Your doctor may need to adjust your treatment.
Liver & Kidney Health
- If you have liver problems, your doctor may lower your dose and monitor you closely.
- In dialysis patients with high blood pressure and low fluid levels, nifedipine may cause a sharp drop in blood pressure.
Drug Interactions
Some medicines can increase the amount of nifedipine in your body. This may cause your blood pressure to drop too much. Tell your doctor if you take:
| Type of Medicine | Examples |
| Antibiotics | Erythromycin |
| Antifungals | Ketoconazole |
| HIV Medicines | Ritonavir |
| Antidepressants | Fluoxetine, Nefazodone |
| Others | Valproic acid, cimetidine, and Quinupristin/Dalfopristin |
Your doctor may need to adjust your dose or monitor your blood pressure more closely.
Lactose Warning
- Nifedipine contains lactose.
- Do not take it if you have:
- Galactose intolerance.
- Lapp lactase deficiency.
- Glucose-galactose malabsorption.
