Uses of Neomycin Polymyxin Bacitracin Ointment
- Minor skin injuries: Cuts, scrapes, and small burns.
- Infection prevention: Stops bacteria from multiplying at the wound site.
- Skin infections: Effective against staphylococci, streptococci, and Gram‑negative bacteria like E. coli and Haemophilus influenzae.

Precautions of Neomycin Polymyxin Bacitracin Ointment
Precautions while taking Neomycin Polymyxin Bacitracin Ointment
Topical use only: For skin application only. Not for oral, ophthalmic, or intranasal use.
Risk of overgrowth: Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non‑susceptible organisms, including fungi.
Pseudomembranous colitis: Though rare with topical antibiotics, colitis has been reported with systemic antibiotic use. If diarrhoea or abdominal cramps occur, discontinue treatment and investigate further.
Systemic absorption risks:
Neomycin: May cause irreversible ototoxicity.
Neomycin, Polymyxin B, Bacitracin: Have nephrotoxic potential.
Polymyxin B: Also carries neurotoxic potential.
Renal impairment: Plasma clearance of neomycin is reduced; dosage should be adjusted.
Concurrent aminoglycosides: Avoid using other aminoglycoside antibiotics when systemic absorption of neomycin could occur.

Route of Administration
For topical skin application only. Not for oral, ophthalmic, or intranasal use.
Adults
After cleaning the affected area (removing pus, crusts, or debris), apply a thin film of ointment.
Use one to three times daily, depending on the clinical condition or as prescribed by the physician.
Treatment should not continue for more than 7 days without medical supervision.
Children (2 years and above)
Suitable for children at the same dose as adults.
Not recommended for neonates or infants under 2 years, due to risk of increased absorption.
Elderly
Suitable for elderly patients.
Exercise caution in cases of decreased renal function, as systemic absorption of Neomycin Sulfate may occur.
Renal Impairment
Dosage adjustment is required in patients with reduced renal function to avoid accumulation and toxicity.

- Neomycin Sulfate hypersensitivity

- Polymyxin B Sulfate reactions
- Rare allergic hypersensitivity reactions have been reported following topical use.
- Bacitracin Zinc reactions
- Rare cases of anaphylaxis have been reported after topical administration.

- Rare: Application site hypersensitivity.
General Disorders & Application Site Conditions
- Rare: Local reactions including pain, erythema (redness), oedema (swelling), pruritus (itching), and worsening of underlying skin conditions.
