How it works?
Uses of Mupirocin Ointment Cream 5gm
Mupirocin Ointment Cream 5gm is a topical antibacterial medicine used to treat common skin infections. It works effectively against Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin‑resistant strains), other staphylococci, streptococci, and certain Gram‑negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Haemophilus influenzae.
Mupidax Ointment is prescribed for infections like impetigo, folliculitis, and furunculosis. It can be used by adults, elderly patients, and children, typically applied two to three times daily for up to ten days, depending on the clinical response.
Precautions of Mupirocin Ointment Cream 5gm
- If you experience a mild sensitization reaction or severe local irritation while applying Mupidax Ointment, it’s important to stop the treatment right away, wash off the ointment cream
and seek appropriate therapy.
Just like with other antibacterial products, using it for an extended period might lead to the growth of non-susceptible organisms. - There have been reports of pseudomembranous colitis linked to antibiotic use, which can vary in severity from mild to life-threatening. So, if a patient develops diarrhea during or after taking antibiotics, it’s crucial to consider this diagnosis.
- While it’s less common with topically applied mupirocin, if significant or prolonged diarrhea occurs, or if the patient has abdominal cramps, treatment should be halted immediately, and further investigation is necessary.
- Regarding renal impairment, polyethylene glycol can be absorbed through open wounds and damaged skin, and it’s eliminated by the kidneys. Like other ointments containing polyethylene glycol, mupirocin ointment should be avoided in situations where large amounts of polyethylene glycol could be absorbed, especially if there’s moderate to severe renal impairment.
- Mupidax ointment is not intended for use in the eyes, intranasally, alongside cannulae, or at the site of central venous cannulation. Be sure to keep it away from your eyes; if it does get contaminated, rinse your eyes thoroughly with water until all traces of the ointment are gone.
