Cefoperazone For Injection USP 1000 mg is a powerful third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat moderate to severe bacterial infections across various body systems. It works by killing bacteria and reaches high concentrations in important tissues and fluids—including those often hard to treat.

Common uses include treatment of:

  • Lung infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis)
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Abdominal infections (e.g., peritonitis)
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Gynecological infections
  • Bone infections and joint infections
  • Bloodstream infections (septicemia)
  • Meningitis (when inflammation is present)
  • Hospital-acquired infections
  • Infections in surgical and reproductive organs

Dosages administration of Cefoperazone For Injection1000 mg

For Adults

  • Standard dose: 2 to 4 grams per day
  • Given in two doses every 12 hours

In severe infections:

  • Dose may increase up to 8 grams per day
  • Higher doses of 12–16 grams/day have been used safely in some cases

For gonorrhea (uncomplicated):

  • 500 mg single injection into the gluteus maximus or thigh muscle

Special Cases

Liver problems (hepatic dysfunction):

  • Reduce dose if liver is severely affected or bile flow is blocked
  • Max dose: 2 grams/day with close monitoring of drug levels

Kidney problems (renal dysfunction):

  • Most people with kidney issues can use normal doses
  • But if kidney function is very low (GFR < 18 ml/min or serum creatinine > 3.5 mg/dL), don’t exceed 4 grams/day
  • If on dialysis, give the dose after the dialysis session

Combined liver and kidney issues:

  • Dose must be adjusted carefully
  • Do not exceed 2 grams/day without regular blood monitoring

For Infants and Children

  • Dose: 50–200 mg/kg/day, split into 2–3 doses per day
  • Maximum dose: 12 grams/day

For newborns (<8 days old):

  • Give dose every 12 hours

How to Administer (IV and IM)

IV Infusion (Adults & Children):

  • Dissolve 1 or 2 gram vial in 20–100 ml of sterile solution
  • Infuse over 15 minutes to 1 hour

Continuous IV infusion:

  • Dissolve 1 gram in 5 ml sterile water, mix with IV fluids

Direct IV injection (push):

  • Max:
    • Adults: 2 grams per dose
    • Children: 50 mg/kg per dose
  • Inject over 3–5 minutes with final concentration of 100 mg/ml

Intramuscular injection (IM):

  • Deep into gluteus or thigh muscle (for gonorrhea, 500 mg single dose)

Before Surgery (Antibiotic Prophylaxis)

  • Give 1–2 grams IV 30–90 minutes before surgery starts.
  • Repeat every 12 hours (usually just for 24 hours)
  • For higher-risk surgeries (e.g., open heart, colorectal), it may continue for up to 72 hours.

Precautions of Cefoperazone For Injection1000 mg

Allergic Reactions

  • Serious allergies (like anaphylaxis) can happen—sometimes fatal.
  • People with past allergies to antibiotics, especially penicillins or cephalosporins, should be treated with caution.
  • If any allergic symptoms appear (rash, breathing difficulty, swelling), stop the medicine immediately and provide emergency care.
  • Emergency treatments may include adrenaline (epinephrine), oxygen, IV steroids, and even intubation if needed.

Severe Skin Reactions

  • In rare cases, patients may experience dangerous skin reactions like:
    • Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS)
    • Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN)
    • Skin peeling (dermatitis exfoliative)
  • If this happens, the medicine must be stopped right away and treated properly.

Liver Problems

  • The drug is mainly removed through bile, so if the liver is damaged or bile flow is blocked:
    • The medicine may stay longer in the body.
    • Dose adjustments may be needed.
    • Patients with both liver and kidney issues need regular blood tests to track drug levels and avoid buildup.

Bleeding Risk

  • Cefoperazone may cause vitamin K deficiency, leading to bleeding problems or coagulopathy.
  • This can happen in:
    • People with poor diets
    • Digestive issues (like cystic fibrosis)
    • Patients on long-term IV nutrition
  • Monitor clotting time and give vitamin K if needed.
  • If bleeding continues with no other cause, stop the medication.

Superinfections & Overgrowth

  • Long-term use may allow other non-susceptible bacteria or fungi to grow.
  • Keep monitoring for secondary infections and organ function—especially the liver, kidneys, and blood cells.
  • This is especially important in premature infants and neonates.

Clostridium difficile-Associated Diarrhea (CDAD)

  • Can range from mild diarrhea to severe, life-threatening colitis.
  • Caused by imbalance in gut bacteria due to antibiotics.
  • May happen during or even 2 months after treatment ends.
  • Stop antibiotics if suspected and begin appropriate treatment.
  • Avoid anti-diarrheal meds that slow down the gut during this.

Use in Infants and Newborns

  • It has been used safely in infants, but caution is needed in premature babies.
  • Weigh the benefits vs. risks before starting treatment.
  • In neonates with jaundice, cefoperazone does NOT worsen bilirubin levels, which is a positive safety note.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions are useful tools, they open lines of communication; give us information; improve interactions, facilitate analysis, and many more.

A pharma CMO is a special kind of an organization, offering contract manufacturing services to pharmaceutical companies for various kinds of drug formulations.

Reduce overall costs and time to market :
Contract manufacturers already have the needed infrastructure and technical staff, so working with a CMO or CDMO can decrease the cost of manufacturing your pharmaceutical products.

Scalability and flexible production capacity :
You can produce what you need when you need it without worrying about excess capacity. Additionally, CMOs understand the importance of quality and compliance, so you don't have to sacrifice safety for scalability.

Save on upgrading and maintaining equipment :
If you have your manufacturing facility, you’ll have to pay to upgrade your equipment as technology advances—which can get expensive. A CMO/CDMO’s only function is to make and distribute products, so part of their core business responsibility is to update their equipment whenever needed and perform maintenance.

Ease supply chain issues :
During the pandemic, there were several instances of supply chain issues, including medicine shortages. CMOs are generally better equipped than startups to handle a supply chain crisis.

Bandwidth to focus on core competencies
When your company resources aren’t directly allocated to manufacturing and distribution, you have more time to focus on other tasks, like marketing your new drug, researching, or working on drug discovery.

We have 7+ manufacturing sites with a minimum of WHO GMP certification and other country-specific approvals like NAFDAC approved, PPK Kenya Approved, TFDA Tanzania Approved, EU-GMP Approved.

We have below manufacturing capacity:
For Tablet, Capsule, and soft gel: up to 1 million units per shift
For Syrup: up to 0.05 Million per shift
For Ampoule and Vial: up to 0.1 million units per shift
For Ointment and Cream: up to 0.1 million units per shift
For Suppository: 0.1 Million units per shift
