How Cefotaxime For Injection 1000 mg Is Given

  • Can be injected into a vein (IV) or muscle (IM)

Dosage for Newborns & Premature Infants

  • Standard dose: 50 mg/kg/day (split into 2–4 doses)
  • Severe infection: May go up to 150–200 mg/kg/day.
  • Newborn age 0–7 days: Dose every 12 hrs.
  • Newborn age 7–28 days: Dose every 8 hrs.

Older Adults

  • No dose change is needed if the kidney and liver are working well.

Infections

  • Using the medicine for a long time might lead to new infections from bacteria not affected by it (called overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms).

Blood Disorders

  • May cause a drop in white blood cells (granulocytopenia), and in rare cases, severe white cell loss (agranulocytosis).
  • Some patients may experience low platelets, low hemoglobin, or low red cell count.
  • These issues often go away once the medicine is stopped.
  • It’s recommended to monitor blood counts if treatment lasts more than 7 days.

Nervous System

  • High doses—especially in those with kidney issues—can cause confusion, dizziness, seizures, or fatigue (encephalopathy)

Heart

  • Rare reports of irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) after fast IV infusion into a central vein.

Digestive System

  • Common side effects: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fungal infections (candidiasis).
  • If diarrhea is severe or lasts long, it could indicate a serious gut condition (pseudomembranous colitis), and the medicine should be stopped.

Liver Function

  • May cause temporary increases in liver enzymes and bilirubin in some patients.

Skin and Allergic Reactions

  • Common: rash, itching, hives.
  • Serious but rare: drug fever, skin peeling, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, toxic skin reactions, and even anaphylactic shock.

Other Reactions

  • Some patients treating spirochete infections (like syphilis) may develop a Herxheimer-like reaction—with fever, chills, headache, and joint pain.

Kidneys

  • May cause a temporary increase in urea or creatinine.
  • Very rare cases of reversible kidney inflammation.

Injection Site Reactions

  • Pain at the injection site is common, especially with higher doses.
  • Vein inflammation (phlebitis) may happen with IV use but usually doesn’t require stopping treatment.
