Ceftriaxone & Sulbactam injection is a combination antibiotic injection used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. Here’s how it works

Stops Bacteria from Constructing Their Cell Walls → Ceftriaxone acts on the building of the bacterial cell wall, weakening bacteria and causing them to burst.

Protects Ceftriaxone from Being Degraded → Sulbactam guards ceftriaxone against certain chemicals (such as beta-lactamase enzymes) that bacteria employ to become resistant to antibiotics.

Dosages administration of Ceftriaxone & Sulbactam Injection 1500mg

Safe Dosing of Ceftriaxone & Sulbactam Injection in Adults, Infants, and Neonates.

Adult Dosage (Ceftriaxone & Sulbactam injection)

  • The usual dose ranges from 1.5 grams to 3 grams, given every 6 hours.
  • This includes:
    • 1 to 2 grams of Ceftriaxone (as sodium salt)
    • 0.5 to 1 gram of Sulbactam (as sodium salt)
  • Important Limit: Do not exceed 4 grams of Sulbactam per day.

Dosage for Neonates, Infants, and Children (up to 12 years old)

  • For neonates (0–14 days old):
    • Dose: 20 to 50 mg/kg of body weight, once per day.
    • Max: Do not go over 50 mg/kg/day.
    • No need to differentiate between premature or full-term newborns.
  • For Infants and Children (15 days to 12 years):
    • Dose: 20 to 80 mg/kg, once per day.
    • If the child weighs 50 kg or more, use adult dosing.
    • If giving more than 50 mg/kg intravenously, administer it as an infusion over at least 30 minutes.

– Uncommon: Between 1 in 1,000 and 1 in 100 people.

– Common: Increases in certain white blood cells (eosinophilia), low white cells (leukopenia), and low platelets (thrombocytopenia)
– Uncommon: Anemia, issues with clotting.
– Not known: Severe drop in red blood cells (haemolytic anemia), dangerously low white cell count (agranulocytosis)

– Not known: Severe allergic responses (like anaphylactic shock), general allergic reactions, and rare reactions such as Jarisch-Herxheimer.

– Uncommon: Headache, dizziness.
– Rare: Brain dysfunction (encephalopathy)

– Not known: Sensation of spinning or dizziness (vertigo)

– Rare: Wheezing or shortness of breath (bronchospasm)

Digestive System
– Common: diarrhea, loose stools.
– Uncommon: Nausea, vomiting.
– Not known: Inflammation of the pancreas, mouth sores, and tongue inflammation.

Liver & Gallbladder
– Common: Elevated liver enzymes in blood tests.
– Not known: Gallstones, jaundice in newborns (kernicterus)

Skin & Allergies
– Common: Skin rash.
– Uncommon: Itching.
– Rare: Hives
– Not known: Serious skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, DRESS, and others.

Kidneys & Urinary
– Rare: Blood or sugar in urine.

Cautions and Warnings for Ceftriaxone & Sulbactam 1500 mg Injection 

Allergy Alert:

  • This medicine should be used carefully in people allergic to penicillin.
  • In rare cases, severe allergic reactions may occur, requiring emergency treatment like epinephrine (adrenaline) and urgent medical care.

Risk of Serious Diarrhea:

  • A type of diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile has been reported with many antibiotics, including this one.
  • It can range from mild to life-threatening, so any diarrhea after starting this medication should be evaluated by a doctor immediately.

Anemia Risk:

  • A specific type of immune-related anemia has been seen in patients on cephalosporin antibiotics like ceftriaxone.
  • If anemia develops while taking this medicine, the treatment should be stopped until the exact cause is identified.

Kidney Function Monitoring:

  • Some temporary changes in kidney markers (BUN and serum creatinine) have been observed.
  • However, the risk of kidney damage with this medicine is similar to other drugs in the same class when taken at the recommended dose.

Blood Clotting Changes:

  • Rare changes in blood clotting time (prothrombin time) may occur.
  • Patients with liver problems or poor nutrition (which may cause low vitamin K levels) might need extra monitoring during treatment.

Gallbladder Effects:

  • Some patients have shown gallbladder changes on ultrasound while taking this medicine.
  • In some cases, they also had symptoms related to gallbladder disease.

Use With Caution If:

  • The patient has a history of digestive issues, especially conditions like colitis (inflammation of the colon).
